Disadvantages- Slide 5
While there are many advantages of Google Slides, there are also some disadvantages of using this cloud-based presentation software.
Users should weigh the pros and cons of Google Slides carefully to determine whether it is the right tool for their needs.
Noted below are five disadvantages of using Google Slides for presentations:
Limited Offline Functionality
While it’s true that Google Slides can be used without an internet connection, it holds both pros and cons of Google Slides since this offline mode has some limitations, including a lack of real-time collaboration and certain multimedia features.
It can be a major drawback for people who need to make last-minute adjustments or work with team members in places without internet availability.
Ironically, one benefit derived from the COVID pandemic was the concerted effort of the government of Barbados to provide internet access island-wide to aid students and educators alike in accessing the technology required. Therefore, this limitation is not as common place as one would anticipate.
Potential Formatting Issues
If you import a presentation created in another programme into Google Slides, there could be formatting issues. Adjustments and reworks can be time-consuming and irritating for users on a tight schedule.
The user may be unable to incorporate files from other sources due to the software’s incompatibility with other presentation applications.
This disadvantage is quite unfortunate and inconvenient as prior to the development of Google Slides, most educators like myself created and used the Microsoft Power Point software.
Such formatting issues were recently experienced during the PGDEL 103 Multi-media Reports class where I attempted to convert a Google Slide presentation into a video as instructed by the tutor and was unsuccessful. I had to download the Google Slide and open it as a Power Point presentation in order to attain the objectives of that particular class.
Security Concerns
As a cloud-based application, users of Google Slides are concerned about the safety of their data being stored on Google’s servers. Although Google takes many precautions to safeguard user information, there is always a chance that it could be stolen or misused. For those whose work involves dealing with private data, this might be a major drawback.
Fewer Advanced Features And Customization Options
Google Slides does not provide as many choices for advanced customization and editing as other presentation software, which could limit a user’s ability to make complicated or unique presentations. It can be a major drawback for users who require specialized options while designing presentations like Microsoft Power Point.
